On July 30, I was fortunate enough to have the assistance of the Listuguj Rangers in deploying our Vemco VR2W acoustic receivers. These receivers are part of our latest Aboriginal Funds for Species at Risk (AFSAR) project, which aims to study American eel and their habitat. The GMRC has been surgically tagging adult yellow eels with acoustic tags within the Restigouche river estuary. The receivers will allow us to monitor their seasonal migrations from the estuary to the freshwater reaches of the Restigouche and Matapedia rivers. To date over 18 eels have been tagged. Mobile tracking is set to commence in mid-August.
Thank you to Sonny Condo, Ralph Isaac, and Duke Metallic for all the help!
