Project Intro
Thermal Refuge
Description
GMRC has identified and prioritized ten thermal refuge sites between Causapscal and Matapedia. Thermal refuges are cold water areas (mostly streams) entering the mainstem river that salmon can use to thermoregulate.
These areas are increasingly important as climate change negatively impacts salmon habitat by rising temperatures and decreasing flow. Temperatures above 23 degree celcius can be detrimental and stressful for salmon.
This project is a partnership between GMRC and Organisme de bassin versant Matapedia-Restigouche and is funded by the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation.
